Boys and Girls Club to Open Center in Fort Erie
Fort Erie, ON - The Boys and Girls Club of Niagara moved forward to open a permanent center in the Town of Fort Erie, Monday, February 2nd by purchasing the Mentholatum Building from the Buffalo and Fort Erie Public Bridge Authority.
The Boys and Girls Club currently offers programs for children and youth, in the Town, at the Central Avenue United Church, Crystal Ridge Community Center and the Fort Erie High School. While these programs fill gaps in service, dedicated space in the east end is required to provide programs daily, which researchers say has the greatest positive outcomes for children, youth and their communities.
The 25,000 square foot building at 20 Lewis Street, Fort Erie was the former home of the Mentholatum Company, since 1906. The Club plans to renovate 8,500 square feet at an estimated cost of $70,000 to house a child and youth center to serve 200-300 participants over the next five years.
The project was made possible through the support of the Holy Family Boys Home. JoAnne Turner says “This represents a strategic investment in the children and youth of Fort Erie, but there is so much more to be done.” The Club is underway, confirming like community partners to share the remaining space and operation costs, securing funding for the needed renovations and finalizing program plans, with an anticipated opening date in the summer of 2009.
